An industrial design can be registered if it fulfills the criteria of novelty and practical applicability.

In Ethiopia, an industrial design is registered for an initial period of five years. The protection period can be extended for additional two periods of 5 years each if proof is furnished that the design is used in Ethiopia.

Requirements for Registration

For registration, the following are required:

• Application form

• Power of Attorney, legalized by an Ethiopian Consulate

• Graphic representation or drawing or specimen

• Statement of novelty

• An indication of the type of products for which the industrial design is to be used

• If priority is claimed, a certified copy of the prior application

• If the applicant is not the inventor, proof of the applicant’s right over the invention
